Soup & Bread 2025, and more

Whew! We had a hectic summer over at Soup & Bread. We took our spinoff project, the pop-up sewing bee we call Soup & Thread, all over the city, staging free community sewing events in the parks as part of our crusade to create the world’s largest soup-themed tablecloth. We even made it onto Colbert! We also partnered with the Chicago Sukkah Design Festival to create what we dubbed a “sharing sukkah” — a cozy space where people can share stories, seeds, plants, soup recipes … you name it. The festival is over now, but our sukkah will soon be relocated to the garden next to the Douglass Park branch library, where it will provide shade and shelter to garden visitors into the coming years.

All of these events were so rewarding, offering us the chance to create intimate connections with strangers, and welcome them into the ever-evolving, expanding community that is Soup & Bread. We’re really grateful to Night Out in the Parks and the CSDF for giving us the space and resources to keep doing this work!

Now that this flurry of activity is over, Soup & Thread is on hold for a few months, so that we can take our tablecloth back to the studio, tidy it up a bit, and assess where we stand. But we’ll be back with more chances to sew together very soon. And, in the meantime, did you notice it’s getting cold and dark outside? That can only mean one thing: it’s time for Soup & Bread.

We are excited to announce the 2025 Soup & Bread schedule — which this year starts with a BONUS Soup & Bread in 2024. Join us Wednesday, December 4 at 5:30 at the Hideout for our kickoff meal of the seasonPay-what-you-can donations on December 4 benefit the work of Ravenswood Community Services, which provides meals and groceries to neighbors in Uptown and Ravenswood. They are a model of a sustainable, community-engaged volunteer group and we’re so happy to work with them again.

See below for the full Soup & Bread schedule for the season. All events are from 5:30-8 at the Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia, in Chicago, except for February 5, when we’re taking it on the road and heading west to slurp soup with our friends at Judson & Moore Distillery, 3057 N. Rockwell.
