Soup and Bread

Soup & Bread 2016: February 3

Soup & Bread 1-27-16 - 1 of 15

This week’s Soup & Bread was an object lesson in upending expectations. We had one soup cook cancel and another get the date wrong; we had a dire shortage of bread; we had basically confusion all around. BUT! When we ran out of food at 6:30, we had an emergency lentil soup delivery from Local Foods (thank you Jamie Proctor). We had cake for not one but two birthdays. We had an utterly lovely, gracious crowd. And we raised an unbelievable $1000 for Hands to Help Ministries, on the far northwest side. Our immense gratitude to everyone who came out, who gave so generously, and who was so patient as we tried to round up extra soup, extra spoons, extra everything.

Now, on to the next challenge: Rounding up some more cooks. We have just three people signed up for next week:

Pat Sheerin, from Trenchermen
Charley Ryan
Carol Watson (Milk & Honey)
Mike McDermott (Smoque)
Tamiz Haiderali (Township)
John McKevitt
Theresa Carter Goodrich
and. again, our friends from Local Foods.

Our beneficiary next week is the Casa Catalina Basic Human Needs Center in Back of the Yards, run by the wonderful Sr. Joellen Tumas. Here’s a Dawn Turner Trice profile of her from a few years ago. Our DJ is Jam Productions’ John Soss. Bread, as ever, is donated by Publican Quality Bread.

Thanks, and see you next week!
