Soup and Bread: Brooklyn!
The rumors are true. Soup and Bread is going to New York.
From 6 to 9 on Thursday, February 4, Sheila and I will be dishing up soup (and selling cookbooks, natch) at the Bell House, in beautiful downtown Gowanus. We’re still lining up cooks, but so far we’ve tapped the Good Fork and the lovely Helen Rosner, of Grub Street Chicago fame. It’s free, and family-friendly — so, tell all your fancy east-coast friends, eh? Donations benefit the New York City Coalition Against Hunger.

UPDATE! Bell House owner and talent buyer Jack McFadden will also be preparing soup. He’s threatening some sort of black bean-and-cheese mashup.
UPDATE II: Also on deck, blogger Dave Klopfenstein, of Dave’s Kitchen fame. Yay, Dave!
UPDATE III: And, welcome Jason Bitner of … a zillion different projects, really, but most recently Cassette From My Ex, the book and the blog, and LaPorte, Indiana, the book and the film. Jason is teaming up with his wife, Danielle Bitner, to make something tasty. Thanks guys!
UPDATE IV: Our friend Millicent Souris, now of the Roebling Tea Room, is also on board the soup train. So exciting!
UPDATE V: And this just in: Cathy Erway, of the terrific blog Not Eating Out in New York (and, natch, author of a new book drawn from the blog called The Art of Eating In) is revving up her stock pot for the cause as well. Seriously, her blog is great — and her enthusiasm for this project has been really heartening. Thanks Cathy!
UPDATE VI: Hooray! Also on board: Jimmy Carbone, of Jimmy’s No. 43 in the East Village; Gabe McMackin, of Roberta’s Pizza in Red Hook; and Matt Greco, chef at Char No. 4, on Smith Street (what neighborhood is that? I can never remember …). Thanks so much to all these ace chefs for signing on without so much of who, what, where, or when. That’s 10 soup cooks total, and I think that’s finally it!
