CUSTOM HOUSE TO HOST FIRST-EVER ‘SOUP OFF’ TO BENEFIT

THE GREATER CHICAGO FOOD DEPOSITORY

CHICAGO (February 20, 2009) – Spring Restaurant Group’s Executive Chef Shawn McClain is joining forces with Chicago’s top chefs for a Soup Off cook-off at Custom House (500 S. Dearborn St.). On Sunday, March 1, 2009 from 1 to 4 p.m. guests can taste sample-size bowls of any and all soups while enjoying discounted cocktail and wine specials. Tickets, which will be sold at the door, are $15 per person with all proceeds benefiting the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Upon arrival, guests will be given a ribbon that they can place at their favorite chefs’ station (a la Top Chef Season 5; Episode Six), located along the restaurant’s periphery.Guest chefs will include Giuseppe Tentori of BOKA & Perennial; Bill Kim of Urban Belly; Carrie Nahabedian of Naha; Dean Zanella and several other local favorites.

A guest panel of Chicago journalists, including ABC 7’s lifestyle reporter and “Hungry Hound” Steve Dolinsky, will be on hand to select a “Critics’ Choice” winner. Tickets are required and will be available at the door.

Chuck forwarded me the above press release the other day, with a note wondering whether Soup and Bread  had inspired some high-profile copycats.

But, while I guess it’s a little strange that this event should pop up on the radar just  now (heck, Dolinsky even came to scope out a soup night a few weeks ago), I’ll happily stick with a great-minds-and-the-zeitgeist explanation. We here at Soup and Bread  hardly have a monopoly on the concept, as I’ve noted in the past.

Unfortunately, I’m going to  be out of town this weekend, so I can’t go. If anyone does, feel free to serve as a soup-blog stringer and send me a full report!

I did email the flack for Custom House to see if there was a way we could, er, generate some synergy around the two events — maybe the winner would donate a soup to an upcoming Soup and Bread? I haven’t heard back.
