It’s true. The presses have stopped rolling and the Soup & Bread Cookbook steams across the Atlantic as I type. We expect to have books in the Agate warehouse by the end of the month and, well, that’s just swell.
In the meantime, we wait. But while it may seem quiet around Soup & Bread central this last month or so, we haven’t been lazy. For one, we’ve got this spiffy new website, courtesy of our friends at The Betterment Society. Take a look around and see what they’ve done! All the recipes and other content from the old blog is here, and searchable. But we’ve also got more info about the book, more merch, a guide to hosting your own Soup & Bread, and, most exciting, an events calendar. Because, damn. It is looking like a busy fall.
First up, this weekend we’ll have a table in the craft fair at Brilliant Corners of Popular Amusements, the new music-circus-vaudeville festival setting up in Eckhart Park Sept. 16-18. Though you’ll have to pony up some cash to see Shellac or El Circo Cheapo, the craft fair and farmers’ market side of the fest is free — as is the sweet lineup of acts on the Birdhouse Stage. We’ll have prints, recipe boxes, aprons, and — assuming they’re back from the printer — our latest set of recipe cards, featuring cold soups from our July 7 bash to benefit the Garfield Park Conservatory. Come say hi!
The following week, I’m joining reps from charitably-minded outfits like First Slice, Co-op Image Sauces, and Sweet Miss Givings for a panel titled “Giving Back to Our Community: One Bite at at Time,” to talk about food-driven philanthropy and how it fits into the local food scene. Moderated by Judith Dunbar Hines, it’s Sept. 21 at 6 PM at Chicago’s Downtown Farmstand, and there’s a tasting and signing and schmoozing session afterward.
Then, a few days later, on Sept. 24, it’s time for the Hideout Block Party — where we’ll have a merch table and, fingers crossed, an advance copy of the book for you to paw through. And, come on, Mavis Staples is on the bill. MAVIS STAPLES PEOPLE. Get yer tickets now.
Once we hit October it may look like we’re lying low — but, really, we’re spending the month gearing up for our big book release party. Plans for that are still brewing. But mark your calendars now for:
