It’s February and as promised, we’re back with more soup! This month’s options are Smoked Barley-Vegetable Soup (vegetarian) from a recipe contributed by Bungalow by Middlebrow and Thai Pumpkin Curry Soup (vegan/gluten-free) from Floriole. Since we initially only had one soup planned for this project, and folks who subscribed for the four-month run in January didn’t have a chance to choose one or the other, we’re going to just leave this on a first-come, first-choice basis. Pre-order your quart(s) today and pick which soup you want on site. Sorry! It’s the fairest solution we could come up with.
Thank you once again to our wonderful cooks Ethan Fischer and Allison Scott, and thank you to our bread donors Publican Quality Bread and Middlebrow. Middlebrow is also donating the smoked barley for the soup, which they’ll be smoking this weekend as part of their Fire the Sainn midwinter festival, from barley grown by Granor Farm. (And shhh, look for Granor and chef Abra Behrens later in the Soup & Bread lineup this year.)
Pick up is from 5-7 pm at the Hideout (1354 W. Wabansia in Chicago) on Wednesday, February 16. All proceeds from this month’s Soup & Bread go to Market Box, launched in April 2020 in Woodlawn as a pandemic emergency response that bulk-buys fresh produce from small, local farms and distributes it for free to families experiencing geographic, mobility, or pandemic-based vulnerability on the South Side. Reps from Market Box will be on hand to talk a bit about the project during Hideout Trivia, taking place in the back room at 6. All proceeds from trivia tickets also go to Market Box.
See you on the 16th!
PS: Sasha-Ann Simons and the team at WBEZ’s Reset were kind enough to feature Soup & Bread To Go on the show’s Food Friday segment on January 28. Listen in here.
