Since 2009, Soup & Bread has been bringing people together in winter to share a meal and raise money for local food pantries in the cozy back room of the Hideout. Soup & Bread shut down abruptly, along with the rest of the world, in March of 2020, and since then we’ve deeply missed the joy of sharing soup with you all. So, while we still don’t quite feel safe sitting and breaking bread together, this winter we’re bringing you the next best thing: Soup & Bread To Go.
On the third Wednesday of the month, from January through April, meet up with us at the Hideout (in the front room or, weather permitting, outside) to pick up a quart jar of delicious vegetarian soup prepared by our pal Ethan Fischer of Urban Canopy from a recipe provided by one of our favorite local chefs. We’ll throw in the recipe as well, and of course, a hearty helping of bread. Pick up hours are from 5-7 pm. Stick around for a (masked) drink! Or join Paul Durica, the Chicago History Museum, and the Newberry Library in the back room for Hideout Trivia at 6 pm (tickets available here). All proceeds from both soup sales and trivia admissions go to support grassroots food security projects in Chicago, a different one each month.
Pre-register here for January’s Soup of the Month ($10) or sign up sight-unseen for a four-month soupscription here ($40) and let us surprise you. Presales for February, March, and April will go live at the start of each month. We will have a limited quantity of soup available for walk-ups each month, but preorders are strongly recommended.
January 19: Recipe from Lula Cafe; proceeds benefit North Lawndale’s Soup for the Soul at the historic Stone Temple Baptist Church.
February 16: TBA
March 16: TBA
April 20: TBA
Bread generously donated by Middlebrow.
All Hideout patrons must show proof of vaccination and comply with Illinois’s indoor mask mandate.
PS: We still have Soup & Bread Cookbooks (updated for the pandemic), as well as Soup & Bread logo hats and thermoses available through the Hideout Online Store! Stock up and keep your head and your soup warm while you cook through the coming winter.
